Rebecca slid to the cold stone floor of the balcony of the room adjacent to the one Cam and Spider occupied. The gentle breeze rustled her dinner gown and played with her hair. But she could find no pleasure in it this evening. She drew her knees up to her chest and struggled to comprehend what she had overheard.

Cam was an heir of Anarwyn and the potential future king of the West Mark. He and Spider were going on an adventure while she remained behind in Abilene. Lorna was also leaving without waiting for Rebecca’s birthday to tell her the secret as she had promised. And the wolf knew she had been eavesdropping. What if he somehow communicated that to Cam?

Of them all, she didn’t want him to know. He would think less of her. For reasons she didn’t really understand, his good opinion mattered to her—more than it should from a young man she barely knew.

Rebecca hugged her legs tighter and ground her teeth. She couldn’t stand it. It wasn’t fair. All her life, she’d been coddled and protected—even though no one knew where she came from or who her parents were. The Tathanar had found her in her mother’s arms at the far northern edge of the Silver Wood. Rebecca had been taken from the arms of her dying mother and raised in the palace as if she were a princess. Now, she was going to be married off without ever having the chance to see the world, to find out who she was, or what she could do.

Rising to her feet, Rebecca slipped from the balcony into the shadowed room and crept to the door. She pressed an ear to the rough wood to make sure the hallway was clear and then slipped out. It was time to take matters into her own hands.
